November 3 2010 Anime Newsletter

Welcome to the November 3rd edition of the BellaOnline Anime newsletter!

Here are the headlines to come out of the anime industry since the last newsletter:

  • Anime studio Fanworks announced on their Twitter page that Koichi Motohashi, the president of the anime studio Nippon Animation, had passed away at the age of 80. Motohashi also served as the executive producer for the acclaimed World Masterpiece Theater series.
  • Takeshi Shudo, a writer for Pokemon and the creator of the Fairy Princess Minky Momo franchise, collapsed at the Nara railway station's smokling area in Nara City on Thursday, October 28. He was rushed to the hospital for emergency surgery, where doctors determined that he had suffered a subarachnoid hemorrhage in his head. Takeshi Shudo passed away on the morning on Friday, October 29 while recovering from the surgery. Takeshi Shudo was 61 years old at the time of his death.
  • Anime voice actor Nachi Nozawa passed away from lung cancer on Saturday, October 30 at the age of 72. His credits include providing voices for Astro Boy, Gatchaman, Space Adventure Cobra (as the main character, Cobra), Mobile Fighter G Gundam, and Claymore.
  • FUNimation has announced that the company has partnered with Fuji Television for an exclusive U.S. online simulcast for Princess Jellyfish. The first two episodes were availale at FUNimation's website on Thursday, October 28. After that, a new episode will be added to the site each week in addition to third-party streaming partners. Princess Jellyfish is a romantic comedy based on a manga by Akiko Higashimura.
  • FUNimation has announced that the company has acquired the rights to the second season of Heaven's Lost Property, which will be released under the name Heaven's Lost Property Forte. FUNimation began streaming the series on Friday, October 29.
  • The Minneapolis/St. Paul 2010 Asian Film Festival will be showing the anime films Summer Wars and Redline at the St. Anthony Main Theatre. Redline will be screened on November 6 and Summer Wars will be screened on November 13. Both films will be shown with Japanese audio.
  • Zeitgeist Films has announced the company will be releasing a DVD of Koji Yamamura's anime shorts collection under the title Franz Kafka's A Country Doctor and Other Fantastic Films. The DVD is being released on December 7, and includes thirteen animated shorts.
  • Anime News Network is reporting that FUNimation is filling out the paperwork to submit the anime film, Summer Wars, for consideration at the next Academy Awards.
