December 14 2011 Anime Newsletter

Welcome to the December 14th edition of the BellaOnline Anime newsletter!

Here are the headlines to come out of the anime industry since the last newsletter:

  • Anime voice actress Kazuko Ute passed away on November 17, 2011 at the age of 84 from a stroke. Ute is best known known in the anime industry for starring in the 1967 television anime series Goku no Daiboken as the voice of Goku.
  • The Heart Catch Pretty Cure! The Movie: Fashion Show in Paris! film has been nominated for the 2012 Kidscreen Awards in the Best One-Off, Special, or TV Movie for Kids category. Also nominated for this category are Wapos Bay Productions' Wapos Bay: Long Goodbyes and Dreamgarden/Moonscoop's ZhuZhu Pets, Quest for Zhu. The awards will be presented at the Kidscreen Summit in New York City on February 9, 2012.
  • Isamu Hirabayashi's "663114" anime short is screening at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival, which is taking place January 19-29, 2012 in Park City, Utah. The story follows a 66-year-old cicada and is a response to Japan's March 11 Great Eastern Japan Earthquake.
  • Crunchyroll is now streaming the Little Nemo - Adventures in Slumberland anime film, which is a light-hearted fantasy about a young boy who enters the magical Slumberland realm to become a playmate for Princess Camille. The film is currently only available to American audiences.
  • MVD Entertainment and Seminal Films have announced that they will be releasing a film version of the ICE anime on DVD in North America on January 24, 2012.
  • Kawaii Kon has announced that artist and illustrator Yoshitaka Amano will be a guest at their upcoming convention. Amano's anime credits include Time Bokan, Hutch the Honeybee, and Yasai no Yousei - N.Y. Salad. Kawaii Kon will be held at the Hawaii Convention Center in Honolulu from March 16-18, 2012.
  • Kawaii Kon has announced that Japanese voice actors Ryo Horikawa and Kenichi Miya, as well as American voice actor Christopher Sabat will be guests at their upcoming convention. Horikawa's roles include Vegeta in Dragon Ball Z, Andromeda Shun in Saint Seiya, Heiji Hattori in Detective Conan, and Reinhard in Legend of the Galactic Heroes. Miya's credits include Dragan in Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's and Entre in [C] - Control. Sabat's credits include Vegeta and Piccolo in the Dragon Ball franchise, Ayame Sohma in Fruits Basket, Alex Louis Armstrong in Fullmetal Alchemist, and Kazuma Kuwabara in Yu Yu Hakusho. Kawaii Kon will be held at the Hawaii Convention Center in Honolulu from March 16-18, 2012.
