February 29 2012 Anime Newsletter

Welcome to the February 29th edition of the BellaOnline Anime newsletter!

Here are the headlines to come out of the anime industry since the last newsletter:

  • Variety is reporting that Warner Bros. licensed the live-action feature rights to Bleach and is now developing the project. Dan Mazeau has been assigned to write the script; he previously wrote the Wrath of the Titans remake. Peter Segal is attached as a producer and could possibly be the director as well; Segal's credits include the Get Smart remake, The Longest Yard, and Anger Management. Other producers include Michael Ewing, Masi Oka, and Jason Hoffs. Branon Coluccio will be an executive producer.
  • Right Stuf and Nozomi Entertainment have announced that they are releasing the Boogiepop Phantom Complete TV Series DVD box set on June 5, 2012. This 4-disc set will include all 12 episodes of the series with English and Japanese audio, as well as English subtitles and English on-screen translations.
  • Tekkoshocon has announced that anime voice actor Todd Haberkorn will be a guest at their upcoming convention. Haberkorn's credits include such roles as Ling Yao in Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Death the Kid in Soul Eater, and North Italy in Hetalia - Axis Powers. Tekkoshocon is taking place March 22-25, 2012 at the Wyndham Grand Hotel in downtown Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
  • Sentai Filmworks has announced that the company has licensed the Kurenai anime series. The company plans to release the series digitally and then on subtitled DVD later in 2012.
  • FUNimation has announced the English dub cast for the Cat Planet Cuties anime series. The full cast listing can be found at the BellaOnline Anime forum.
  • Right Stuf has announced on their website and in their weekly newsletter that Aniplex of America will be releasing Puella Magi Madoka Magica Volume 2 on April 10, 2012 as a DVD/Blu-ray limited edition, on Blu-ray, and on DVD. All three pressings will include episodes 5-8 with English audio, Japanese audio, English subtitles, and textless opening. The DVD/Blu-ray limited edition also includes the second soundtrack CD, exclusive collector's box, two double-sided posters, collectible postcards, and a deluxe 24-page booklet.
  • The Box Office Mojo website reported that The Secret World of Arrietty earned an estimated US$4,503,000 in the U.S. during the February 24-26 weekend. In its second week at the box office, Arrietty falls one spot to number ten. The film, which is showing in 1,522 theaters, had an estimated per-screen average of US$2,959; ticket sales also dropped about 30% from the first weekend. With a current estimated total gross of US$14,660,000, Arrietty is the sixth highest grossing theatrical anime release in the United States.
  • Ai-Kon has announced that anime voice actors Christopher R. Sabat and Brina Palencia will be guests at their upcoming convention. Sabat's credits include numerous voices in Dragon Ball Z, Alex Louis Armstrong in Fullmetal Alchemist, Ayame Sohma in Fruits Basket, and Roronoa Zoro in One Piece. Palencia's credits include Natsuki in Summer Wars, Ciel Phantomhive in Black Butler, Yumi Azusa in Soul Eater, and Rei Ayanami in Evangelion 1.0 and Evangelion 2.0.
