Welcome to the March 12th edition of the BellaOnline Anime newsletter!
Late last week, it was announced by Anime News Networkthat Japanese voice actor Taichirou Hirokawa passed away on March 3 after a battle with cancer. Hirokawa was the voice of Mamoru Kodai (the older brother of Susumu Kodai) in the Space Battleship Yamato franchise. I wrote a biography of Taichirou Hirokawa, and a link is included later in the newsletter.
Over the weekend, I saw an advertisement on Cartoon Network for an airing of Miyazaki's film, Howl's Moving Castle. It's airing this Sunday (March 16) at 7:00 p.m. EDT/PDT. If you haven't seen this film yet and have access to Cartoon Network, this would be a great opportunity to see the film without having to spend extra money. In honor of this upcoming airing on Cartoon Network, I have posted a review of Howl's Moving Castle to the Anime section at BellaOnline; a link to the review is included later in the newsletter.
And for those who may not have heard, there was a tragedy earlier this week, which had a connection to anime. A 10-year-old boy in Everett, Washington, convinced five of his friends to bury him head-first into a one-foot-deep sandbox, in order to imitate something he had seen on Naruto. He was buried from head to chest. When the boy first started thrashing, his friends assumed he was playing. Once the kids realized something was wrong and pulled him out, and called for adults. CPR was administered until medical help could arrive. Sadly, the boy died at Children's Hospital in Seattle at 3:35 PDT on Monday, March 10.
This incident has spurred some discussion in the Anime forum. If you would like to read what others have said, or to add your voice to the discussion, please use the link to the forum that's included later in the newsletter.
