March 23 2011 Anime Newsletter

Welcome to the March 23rd edition of the BellaOnline Anime newsletter!

Here are the headlines to come out of the anime industry since the last newsletter:

  • Anime News Network reported that animator and producer Hiroshi Kakoi was killed in the earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan on Friday, March 11, 2011. They say Mr. Kakoi's passing was confirmed by Jan Scott Frazier (a close friend of the deceased), as well as by other anime industry members. Mr. Kakoi was a key animator for the first Macross series and the 1980s Astro Boy series. He produced the Super Dimension Fortress Macross II: Lovers, Again and Moldiver original video anime series, and also served as a production manager at Artland and the anime studio AIC. Mr. Kakoi is survived by wis wife, Kumiko.
  • Ai-Kon has announced the first round of guests for their 2011 convention, and they are voice actors Greg Ayres and Eric Vale. Greg Ayres has provided voices for such anime as Neon Genesis Evangelion, Chrono Crusade, Negima!, D.N. Angel, and SuperGALS!. Eric Vale's credits include Dragon Ball Z, One Piece, Fruits Basket, Fullmetal Alchemist, and Hetalia: Axis Powers. Ai-Kon will take place in Manitoba from July 15-17, 2011.
  • Section23 has announced the company's upcoming anime releases for June 2011. On June 7, the company will release Maid Sama Collection 1 as a Japanese language with English subtitles DVD. June 14 is the release of the Demon King Daimao Complete Collection; both the DVD and Blu-ray releases will include an English dub and Japanese language audio with subtitles. You're Under Arrest: Full Throttle (Season 3) Complete Collection is being released on June 21, with Japanese language audio and English subtitles. On June 28, the company will release the High School of the Dead Complete Collection on DVD and Blu-ray; both releases will include an English dub and Japanese language audio with English subtitles.
  • Organizers of the Anime, Manga and Music (AM2) convention in Anaheim, California, have announced they are donating 23 percent of all passport sales made until April 30, towards various Japanese disaster relief funds.
  • Anime retailer Right Stuf is listing a June 14, 2011 release date for a Dance in the Vampire Bund DVD/Blu-ray Complete Series combo from FUNimation. According to Anime News Network, they have confirmed that the release will be unedited.

This week, I posted three new articles to the Anime site. The first is an article that talks about the effects that the recent earthquake and tsunami have had on the anime industry. The second is an overview article for Animation Runner Kuromi. The third is a review of Fullmetal Alchemist: The Conqueror of Shamballa. I have also added words from Animation Runner Kuromi to the list for the anime word games. The Fullmetal Alchemist Premium OVA Collection has been added to the Anime Shop, and it's also an Editor's Recommendation on the main page of the Anime site.

Animation Runner Kuromi
Animation Runner Kuromi consists of two OVAs. The first was released in Japan in 2001, while the second OVA was released in 2004.

Conqueror of Shamballa
Fullmetal Alchemist the Movie: Conqueror of Shamballa was directed by Seiji Mizushima and was released to Japanese theaters on July 23, 2005.
