April 20 2011 Anime Newsletter

Welcome to the April 20th edition of the BellaOnline Anime newsletter!

Here are the headlines to come out of the anime industry since the last newsletter:

  • Anime director Osamu Dezaki passed away on Sunday, April 17, 2011 at the age of 67 due to lung cancer. Dezaki's directing credits include Tomorrow's Joe, Astro Boy, The Rose of Versailles, and Space Adventure Cobra, among others. He is also a co-founder of the anime studio MADHOUSE and Studio Annapuru.
  • FUNimation has announced that the company has partnered with Toei Animation to stream the Toriko anime series. The English-subtitled episodes began simulcasting on Thursday, April 14th at 6:00 p.m. PST on Hulu and at FUNimation's website. A new episode will be streamed each week.
  • FUNimation has announced that the company has acquired the home entertainment, broadcast and digital rights to the Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt anime series.
  • FUNimation has announced that the company will simulcast [C] - Control - The Money and Soul of Possibility. The first episode will be available at FUNimation's website, in addition to third-party streaming partners, on April 21, 2011. Each week, a new episode will be added.
  • NIS America has announced that the company has acquired the rights to the Katanagatari and Arakawa Under the Bridge television anime series. Each series will be released in a Blu-ray Disc and DVD combination pack with English subtitles in July 2011. The releases will also include oversized chipboard boxes and hardcover art books.
  • Section23 has announced that its client Sentai Filmworks has acquired the North American rights to Hidamari Sketch x Hoshimittsu and Orphen.
  • Section 23 has announced the following releases for July 2011: Orphen Complete Collection on July 5, Allison & Lillia Generation 2 on July 12, Hidamari Sketch Hoshimittsu on July 19, and Angel Beats! Complete Collection on DVD and Blu-ray on July 26.
  • Animazement has announced the following appearances for their 2011 convention: Kyoko Kon (wife of the late anime director Satoshi Kon), Masao Maruyama (co-founder of the MADHOUSE anime studio), Hidenori Matsubara (animation director for the new Evangelion films and character designer for Ah! My Goddess and Sakurs Wars), Ryusei Nakao (voice actor for Freeza in Dragon Ball Z and Murza Melym in Armored Troops Votoms), Jouji Nakata (voice actor for Alucard in Hellsing and Count of Monte Cristo in Gankutsuou), and Hiroaki Hirata (voice actor for Sanji in One Piece and Benny in Black Lagoon). In addition, it was also announced that there will be screenings of Paprika and Tokyo Godfathers at the convention. Animazement 2011 is taking place May 27-29 at the Raleigh Convention Center.

Sherlock Hound is an anime series based on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes series.
