Welcome to the August 19th edition of the BellaOnline Anime newsletter!
First, I owe my newsletter subscribers an apology. I realized that I'd forgotten to mention in the last newsletter that Hayao Miyazaki's Ponyo was opening in U.S. theaters last weekend. However, I'm very pleased to be able to say that Ponyo opened at #9 at the U.S. box office, and grossing $3.5 million in its first week of release. With this opening, Ponyo is currently the 8th highest grossing anime theatrical release in the United States.
Yesterday, FUNimation announced they are finally going to be resuming the One Piece online streaming for simulcasts; roughly an hour after a new episode airs in the Japan, FUNimation will make the episode available to stream for viewers in the United States and Canada. The simulcast resumes on Saturday, August 29 at 10 p.m. EDT/7 p.m. PDT with episode 415.
Also, Syfy has announced their plans for the Ani-Monday block for October 2009. The anime series Monster will start airing on October 12, and two weekly episodes will air during the last three Mondays in October. The block will also screen Kai Doh Maru. The motion comic versions of Street Fighter and Voltron begin airing on October 5, with other episodes of the motion comics airing on October 12 and October 19. Macross Plus will air on October 26. If you're a fan of any of these properties, you might want to mark your calendar now to remember to watch Ani-Monday during the month of October.
