August 4 2010 Anime Newsletter

Welcome to the August 4th edition of the BellaOnline Anime newsletter!

Last weekend was the Otakon anime convention, which took place in Baltimore, Maryland. Some of the US anime distributors made announcements during the convention, and those announcements make up the bulk of the news in this week's newsletter. Here are the headlines to come out of the anime industry since the last newsletter:

*Bandai Entertainment announced at Otakon that the company has licensed two series from the anime studio Sunrise: My-Otome 0~S.ifr~ (a three-episode OVA prequel series to My-Otome) and The Girl Who Leapt Through Space. The company announced two of the English dub actors for the K-ON! anime series: Stephanie Sheh as Yui and Cristina Vee as Mio. Bandai also announced that the second volume of Mobile Suit Gundam UC will be available on Sony's online PlayStation Store on October 30, with a Blu-Ray release in November. The Blu-Ray release will include the 60-minute episode, 20 minutes of bonus features, audio in Japanese and English, and subtitles (available in Japanese, English, French, Spanish, Traditional Chinese, and Simplified Chinese). Anime News Network is reporting that during the question and answer session at the panel, Bandai Entertainment President Ken Iyadomi said he requested the original Mobile Suit Gundam anime from Sunrise again during a meeting at Otakon.

*FUNimation announced during their Otakon panel that the company has licensed the anime films, Evangelion 2.0: You Can (Not) Advance (the 2.22 version), Summer Wars, and Hetalia - Axis Powers: Paint It, White for home video. FUNimation is planning a DVD, Blu-Ray, and theatrical release for the Evangelion film, while Summer Wars will receive a theatrical release this year (with a DVD and Blu-Ray release to follow next year). The Hetalia film will ship on DVD next year. The company also announced they have acquired the home video and streaming rights for Hetalia World Series, Strike Witches 2, Blessing of the Campanella, and Okamisan. FUNimation also announced the English dub casts for Black Butler, Oh! Edo Rocket, and Phantom ~Requiem for the Phantom~ anime series; also, announcements were made regarding an online social networking website and anime-branded pre-paid debit cards (the cards will be available in August, and will include images from such anime as Afro Samurai: Resurrection, Fruits Basket, Sgt. Frog, Soul Eater, and Tsubasa; the cards work anywhere Visa credit and debit cards are accepted). The website will take FUNimation's current website and add new content (improved video environment, ability to post comments and reviews on certain content, cosplay and fan art galleries). Membership is free and will allow users to create an account and personalized profile. An Elite Membership will launch later this year, which will include access to high-quality English dubbed episodes before they become available to the public. Users can sign up for beta testing, which will take place in September; the service will launch in October.

*At their Otakon panel, Aniplex announced part of the cast for the English dub of the Durarara!! anime series: Kari Wahlgren as Celty, Darrel Guilbeau as Mikado, and Crispin Freeman as Shizuo. The company will announce more of the cast on its YouTube channel and on the official website for the series. Aniplex also added that the company will not be using the English Baccano! voice actors for the same characters in Durarara!! The first of three parts in the DVD release (which will include video-only anime episodes) is scheduled to ship in January 2011. The company also confirmed that it's Read or Die Blu-Ray box set will also ship this winter. The five-disc set will include the original three Read or Die video anime episodes, as well as the 26 episodes in the R.O.D. -The TV- anime sequel. The set will have both Japanese and English language soundtracks.

*FUNimation streamed the first subtitled episode of the anime series, Girls Bravo, on the company's YouTube channel on Friday, July 30. The series was previously licensed in North America by Geneon Entertainment.

*North American DVD distributor Discotek Media announced the company has acquired the licenses for two Galaxy Express 999 films (Galaxy Express 999 and Adieu Galaxy Express 999), as well as the first Project A-Ko anime film.

There are topics in the anime forum for these news stories. If you'd like to join in on the discussion, there's a link to the forum later in the newsletter. You need to have a BellaOnline forum account in order to post, but signing up for a forum account is free.

This week, I posted two new articles to the Anime site. The first is a review for Voltron Volume 7. The second is a review of Dairugger XV Volume 2. Both of these releases have been added to the Voltron/Beast King GoLion/Dairugger XV section of the Anime Shop. Dairugger XV Volume 2 is also an Editor's Recommendation on the main page for the anime site.

Thank you for your support of the BellaOnline Anime site, newsletter, and forum. Be sure to watch your inbox next Wednesday for the August 11th edition of the BellaOnline Anime newsletter.
