September 15 2010 Anime Newsletter

Welcome to the September 15th edition of the BellaOnline Anime newsletter!

Here are the headlines to come out of the anime industry since the last newsletter:

*Anime voice actor Ayao Wada passed away on Monday, September 6 due to pneumonia at the age of 81. His biggest credit was Mighty Atom (known as Astro Boy in the US) providing the voice of Higeoyagi (known as Pompous in the English version). He also provided voices in Under Sea Boy Marine, Panda! Go, Panda! and Panda! Go, Panda! Rainy Day Circus.

*The New Beverly Cinema theater in Los Angeles will hold screenings for Satoshi Kon's Paprika and Millennium Actress as a tribute to the late director. There will be two screenings on Sunday, September 19 and one screening on Monday, September 20. On both nights, Millennium Actress will be shown first, followed by Paprika.

*Anime News Network reported that online retailer Right Stuf removed all of the titles released by the North American anime distributor Urban Vision from its catalog. Urban Vision released a statement after being contacted by ANN, saying that "Urban Vision Entertainment has been going through restructuring our business model and operations. Given today's economic climate, physical distribution of goods has become riskier." The statement also added, "We've begun working more towards broadcasting and online avenues of distribution." The anime titles that Urban Vision has distributed include the Gatchaman video series, Goku: Midnight Eye, Golgo 13: The Professional, the Ninja Scroll television series, Pet Shop of Horrors, Tekkaman Blade II, the first Vampire Hunter D video anime, as well as Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust.

*Right Stuf, Inc. and Nozomi Entertainment have announced that the first season of Maria Watches Over Us will be added to the streamed anime programming at their official YouTube channel. The first episode is now available in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand. Subsequent episodes will be posted weekly. Each episode beyond the first two will stream for a limited time. All of the episodes will be presented with Japanese audio and English subtitles that retain the Japanese honorifics.

*Aniplex America announced that the US premiere of the anime series, Star Driver Kagayaki no Takuto will take place at New York Comic Con/Anime Festival. The company also announced that the first Mardock Scramble film, Mardock Scramble: The First Compression, will have its world premiere at New York Comic Con.

*Anime News Network has announced that the website has acquired a license to stream Animation Runner Kuromi. The site's license includes both video volumes with English subtitles and English dubs. The stream is "slated to launch in a few weeks."

There are topics in the anime forum for these news stories. If you'd like to join in on the discussion, there's a link to the forum later in the newsletter. You need to have a BellaOnline forum account in order to post, but signing up for a forum account is free.

This week, I posted two new articles to the Anime site. The first is a review of the Saber Rider and the Star Sheriffs Complete Collection DVD Box Set. This item has been added to the Anime Shop, and it is also an Editor's Recommendation on the main page of the Anime site. The second article is an episode listing for Saber Rider and the Star Sheriffs.

This week, I also added Solua's "Yoake no Ashioto" single (the ending theme song for Noein: To Your Other Self) to the main area of the Anime Shop, the Best of Inuyasha CD was added to the Rumiko Takahashi area of the Anime Shop, and the Space Battleship Yamato BGM 1 CD was added to the Space Battleship Yamato/Star Blazers area of the Anime Shop.
