September 23 2009 Anime Newsletter

Welcome to the September 23rd edition of the BellaOnline Anime newsletter!

Here's a look at some of the anime headlines from the past week:

*Yoshito Usui, the creator of the Crayon Shin-Chan manga, has died at the age of 51. On September 11. he had gone on a day hiking trip in the mountains in the Gunma Prefecture and Nagano Prefecture area and did not return home as expected. After being missing for a little over a week, his body was discovered on September 19 below a cliff. Usui's body was positively identified on September 20. Since Usui had submitted two chapters to his editor before his death, the manga will continue in Futabasha's Manga Town magazine until November. At this time, the future of the Crayon Shin-Chan anime series is unknown.

*To celebrate the 10th anniversary of Yu-Gi-Oh!, a film will be released to Japanese theaters in early 2010 that will include 3D graphics. The film will feature the main heroes of all three Yu-Gi-Oh! series, and they will come together to fight a new enemy called Paradox.

*Ponyo grossed an estimated $176,000 in U.S. theaters during the September 18-20 weekend, and ticket sales fell 72% from last weekend. With a current total estimated gross of $14,644,000, Ponyo remains the fifth highest grossing theatrical anime in the U.S.

*Hayao Miyazaki has won the Karl Edward Wagner Award at the 2009 British Fantasy Awards presentation at FantasyCon in Nottingham. The winner of the award is selected by the British Film Society, FantasyCon, and BFAwards Committees.

There are topics for each of these news stories at the BellaOnline Anime forum. If you would like to join in on the discussion, there's a link to the forum later in the newsletter. You need to have a BellaOnline forum account in order to post, but signing up for a forum account is free.

This week, I posted two new overview articles to the BellaOnline Anime site. One is an overview for Claymore, and the other is an overview for Baccano! There are links to both of these articles later in the newsletter. I have also added words from both of these series to the list for the Anime site's word games. And this week, Steamboy is an Editor's Recommendation on the main page of the Anime site.

Thank you for your support of the BellaOnline Anime site, newsletter, and forum. Be sure to watch your inbox next Wednesday for the September 30th edition of the BellaOnline Anime newsletter.
