Here's the latest article from the Bellydancing site at BellaOnline.com.

Destination Cairo at the HABDA Gala

On September 6, 2008, Destination Cairo performed at the HABDA Gala. It was a night filled with excellent performances by many beautiful dancers. Destination Cairo, the dance troupe that I belong to, performed to a fun, energetic song called "Hep Hup Remix" by Yeni Mezdeke.

A Note about myself:

I live in Houston, Texas, about 45 minutes from Galveston, Texas. As you recall, Hurricane Ike hit the Galveston shores. Living in Houston, we got hit with strong winds.

On the night of the storm, I decided to brave it out and "hunker down" like the city officials urged the citizens to do. My little dachsund PennyLane was with me. We lost power around 2:30a.m. Some residents lost power around 9:30p.m.

It is an experience that has humbled me. Right now, I pause just thinking about it all. When you lose power, water, and you are alone, this nothingness takes over. I had to come to my senses and think about "what next?".

Luckily, the freeway was near my apartment complex and I left to my hometown in Corpus Christi. When I returned to Houston more than a week later, I found that most of the debris in my area was picked up, restaurants were open and people were around and about.

There is something to be said about the human spirit. Nothing can bring it down. Humans act quick, dust off the dirt on their pants and move on. We adapt, we come together, and make things happen.

I am back at work, and believe me it is taking some time to adjust.

My thoughts are with those who lost everything. Their homes, their history, are just memories. They are the ones who suffered, but in time they will be able to live as they once did.
