Today is "THE DAY OF GERMAN UNITY" - October 3

Or as it is known in Germany "Tag der Deutsche Einheit".

A celebration marking the day when in 1990 the German Democratic Republic, East Germany, officially became part of the Federal Republic of Germany, after 40 years of communism under Soviet rule.

It was a random date, chosen because it was 'uncomplicated' and without any 'bad' memories, however although the "two Germanys" became one this is still a continuing process, as of course after their 40 years of very different experiences it was not possible for the people to "become one" quite that quickly.
