When I went home in 2006 to celebrate a big birthday (it ended in a zero, but I am not going to tell you which it was), I threw myself a mixed German/Canadian-style birthday. I invited 35 guests; they brought potluck salads and dessert and I provided the BBQ meat and beverages. Everyone had a great time. It was sweeter because I only visit home once every year or two.
