May 9 2012 German Culture NewsletterThis weeks article covers the 2,900km GERMAN AVENUES ROUTE. The longest of Germany's 150 themed routes, stretching from Sellin on the Baltic island of Ruegen to the World Heritage site Reichenau Island on Lake Constance, and passing under a canopy of ancient trees which were first planted to give directions to travelers. The Avenue Route celebrates the 20th anniversary of its 'rebirth' in 2012, as, although it has existed since the 17th century, it wasn't until the 'fall of the wall' that the chance was once again there for it to be restored. It, and most of the trees, began life in the times of oxen carts and stage coaches, and to have the opportunity to journey along today is in every way quite an experience. http://www.bellaonline.com/articles/art176447.asp No German word this week, but a German proverb instead: 'To remain young while growing old is the highest blessing' germanculture.bellaonline.com has many more articles, and a forum: http://forums.bellaonline.com/ubbthreads.php?ubb=postlist&Board=247 If you have any comments or questions I hope to hear from you, either in the forum or via email.
