June 1 2012 German Culture Newsletter
It is June, summer has officially arrived and with it a celebration which takes place in June, but mainly in one half of the country.
INTERNATIONAL CHILDREN'S DAY IN GERMANY
June 1st is International 'Kindertag', but Germany has two "Children's Days" to celebrate as "World Children's Day" is honored in September. Holidays which are still divided into East and West as they were in the years before the country's unification.
And this weeks word is GLUECKSPILZ............literally a 'Lucky Mushroom'............which describes those folk who seem to float through life attracting only good things. The ones who pass exams without appeared to have had to study, who never have to arrive flustered at an appointment because they got caught up in traffic jams, and whose white outfit can be guaranteed to stay white the whole day.
A GLUECKSPILZ, a lucky one.
