January 29 2007 Horses Newsletter

Horse lovers,

It is with great sadness that we reflect on Barbaro, his triumphant but brief career, and today's news that he was in too much pain from his injuries and had to be euthanized.

Tributes to Barbaro are flooding the web, and it my personal hope that this brave horse's struggle against the odds will cause the right types of changes in horse racing, where injuries like this are things of the past, and not as dreadfully present as they are today. Rest in peace Barbaro, and may you run with delight and joy in an afterlife that is as magical as it is pain free.

In my own small tribute to Barbaro, the latest article from the Horses site at BellaOnline.com is about the pastern, a region of the horse so crucial to their welfare.

The Pastern
A small area between the fetlock and the hoof, the pastern is the main shock absorbing region of the equine leg. Learn about its anatomy, symptoms of injury, and how to maintain healthy pasterns in your horse.

The forums at BellaOnline went through a major overhaul the past few months. I am still relearning how to play with the treads. However, please feel free to stop by the Horse Forums and either leave a note about the horses in your life, Barbaro, or anything else on your mind.

I hope everyone has the opportunity to spend some extra time with their horses this week. I know our gelding will be getting extra attention, and I thank the powers that be for his soundness. How beautiful the horse, but how fragile they are even in light of their power.

Until next time, friends, ride safe, be sound, and hope to see you around the barn.
