FINANCIAL MARKETS SUMMARY for the WEEK ENDING AUGUST 1,2008

The major economic news of the week included the following:
The US unemployment rate in July rose to its highest level in 4 years.
The weekly claims for unemployment benefits rose to its highest level in 5 yrs.
July auto sales dropped to their lowest level since April 1992.

Yet the financial markets ignored all of this and most broad indices rose slightly across the board in US stocks, overseas stocks, bonds, US dollar, and commodities.
