January 8 2007 Irish Culture Newsletter

Welcome to Irish Culture at BellaOnline.com

Now that the holidays are behind us, it’s time to settle into winter proper. What better way than to scare the bejaysus out of ourselves and our listeners with some folk stories of old Ireland? The Irish love a good spooky story…usually while protesting that they don’t believe in such things. Is this a case of “methinks the lady doth protest too much?” Methinks so. And who could blame us, poor creatures that we are---winter nights are extra long and extra dark in Ireland, and there are thousands of years of belief in the otherworld…mix in a wee drop of spirits of the drinkable kind and a bit of ancestral memory, and we’ll all have to huddle together for safekeeping, and that’s lovely.

The Banshee

The Banshee is a fairy woman who brings with her cry the notice to beware.
