July 5 2006 Mexican Food Newsletter

Hola Mexican foodies!

I hope everyone had a nice holiday weekend. This week's recipes are both for delicious tamales! If you are intimidated by tamales, get a group of friends together to make the assembly a snap. Divvy them all up at the end--tamales freeze beautifully.

Tamales with Sweet Potatoes and Chipotles
Chipotles add the other kind of heat to hot tamales and couldnīt make a better match for creamy sweet potatoes.

Tamales with Pork and Plantains
You've tried pork tamales...but have you tried adding plantains?

I haven't forgotten my readers' requests...I was so glad to get comments from several of you on what you'd like to read about in future articles. This coming week, I'll cover one request that probably pertains to lots of you: what to do with leftover meat! Instead of a typical recipe format, this article will give you lots of ideas for thinking creatively about leftovers. Stay tuned, and keep the suggestions coming!

In honor of this week's recipes, here are two tamales trivia questions. You can find the answers in the articles!

Tamales Trivia Question #1:

How long have tamales been around?
a. 500 years
b. 1000 years
c. 5000 years

Tamales Trivia Question #2:

What is a "tamale?"

a. There's no such thing
b. Masa and filling wrapped in a corn husk and steamed
c. A chili stuffed with meat and smothered with cheese
