March 5 2013 Tatting Newsletter

International Women's Day falls on Monday, March 5 this year. There is an interesting website about women and the progress we have made. (http://www.internationalwomensday.com/) Perhaps this year we as tatters can participate somehow. Is there a good cause to which you can donate your tatting for fundraising? There are many Tat days coming up this year of course as you can see in the events list below.

And there are always causes and project to be found in your own hometown. Newborns-in-Need is just one of many. (http://www.newbornsinneed.org/) This group prepares baby outfits for low income families. And sadly, there are occasions when burial layettes are needed for newborns. Many tatters prepare such outfits and add touches of tatting, too.

The Lace Museum in Sunnyvale, California (http://thelacemuseum.org) sponsors sales during the year and items can be donated to be sold in the gift shop also. These sales support the Lace Museum financially. It is an all volunteer, non profit organization with the mission to preserve old lace and to teach the art of lace making, INCLUDING, tatting!

And check with your local lace guilds. Many of them, like the Palmetto Tatters Guild (http://www.palmettotatters.org/fundraisers.shtml) have ongoing fundraisers all year long. YOU can help.

My list of Upcoming Events seems to be growing longer. Please take a look and mark your calendars for these great tatting events.
Special presentation:
March 26, 2013 7:00 p.m. "The History of Lace" Presentation + Lace making demonstrations (bobbin lace, RPL, tatting, knitting, needlelace, crochet) at the Downtown Library of the Tippecanoe Public Library System 627 South Street Lafayette, IN 47901.

April 12 - 14, 2013 Finger Lakes Tatting Group Lodi, New York Theme: Stars
http://www.fingerlakestatting.com

The Finger Lakes Tatting Group’s 15th Annual Tatting Seminars in the Finger Lakes is planned for April 13 & 14 in Lodi, NY – with classes, vendors, raffles, banquet silent and live auction, great food – including lots of chocolate – and all kinds of good things tatting related. This year’s theme is Stars. Registration information can be found on our website, fingerlakestatting.com; questions may be directed to Karey Solomon at threads@empacc.net.

We’ve begun offering scholarships informally – until now, we’ve used any money we’ve made to keep costs down for participants – but wanting to do more for those who need encouragement to come, this year we’re establishing a scholarship fund. We’re raising money for it with a Starry Night quilt. The quilt is made – it’s shades of blue and double/queen sized - now we need lots and lots more yellow and gold five-pointed stars to finish it - we’re asking tatters to leave their ends looooong for sewing-on. Contributions (and bids) are invited – please contact Karey Solomon at threads@empacc.net.

Thank you so much! And should you feel inclined to join us, you’d be as welcome as the stars in the evening sky!
