Miss Bell very cleverly took was what originally a tatted insertion of traditional design and joined it back on itself to make a very easy scalloped edging food for collars, cuffs, and household linens.

"Pretty Edge of Tatting" by Grace I. Bell (Hudson O.)

Here we have a pretty tatting edge. Abbreviations: p picot, ds, double stitch.

Directions: Begin with ring of 3 ds picot twice 2 ds picot twice 3 ds picot 3 ds close. 10 ds on second thread. Ring 4 ds picot three times, 4 ds close; 10 ds on the spool thread. Ring 3 ds join to side p. of first ring, finish like first; 10 ds on spool thread. Ring 4 ds join to side p of second ring; finish like second.

Repeat until 7 small rings are made, * 10 ds on the spool thread, join to side picot of small ring, 10 ds, large ring: * 6 ds on spool thread. Large ring, * 10 ds p. 10 ds on spool thread. Large ring. * 10 ds on spool thread. Ring 4 ds, join to both ps. between 10 ds, 4 ds. join to end p of last small ring, 4 ds p. 4 ds, close. 10 ds on spool thread. Repeat to end. Second scallop joined to first by end ps. of large rings.


Modern tatting notation abbreviations:
R = ring, CH = chain, p or - = picot, RW = reverse work, clr = close ring, + = join

R 3 - 3 - 2 - 2 - 3 - 3 clr. RW
CH 10 RW
R 4 - 4 - 4 - 4 clr. RW
*CH 10 RW
R 3 + (join to side picot of adjacent ring) 3 - 2 - 2 - 3 - 3 clr. RW
CH 10 RW
R 4 + (join to side picot of adjacent ring) 4 - 4 - 4 clr. RW
Repeat 5 more times (until 7 of the small rings are complete.)

Continue in like manner joining the 8th and 9th small rings to the side picot of #7 small ring.

R 3 + (join to side picot of adjacent ring) 3 - 2 - 2 - 3 - 3 clr. RW
CH 6 RW
R 3 + (join to side picot of adjacent ring) 3 - 2 - 2 - 3 - 3 clr. RW
CH 10 RW

Continue in like manner but leave both the next two small rings unjoined.
Tat large ring and chain as before
R 4 + (make one join to both adjacent small rings) 4 -+ (join to center picot of ring opposite) 4 - 4 clr. RW

Second scallop joined to center picots of large rings of first scallop.
