A Whale of a Tale by Kim Rumford

Niagara

Jody Zolli

Niagara
She sits
Riptide, hot and still
Awaiting
The gates
To sluice, to swell, to spill

A torrid indigo
Layers slide sullen, slow
Unknowing the word "build"
But intimate with its inner physics

The mystery lies
In wide-eyed surprise
As undertow sends subsonic surges
To tear the laminar gleam
To a froth of shocked white

The sudden flow grasps
With fingerless gasps
Breathless and unhindered

Repetition brings the search
For the once-dreamed dam
To someday staunch
The awkward avalanche
Of this Niagara´s needs
