Lady Butterfly by Joann Vitali

Poetry

Tattoos

JLynn Marshall

He had beautiful eyes
and a full sleeve.
I had a fluttering heart
and black marks on my wrist
that made him smile.

We gave narration
to the illustrations
inked across our bodies
over wontons and
sweet and sour chicken,

getting to know each other
one piece at a time.

Later, in the dim light
of sheets and passion,
tinted skin pressed against
tinted skin
as we touched bits

of each others’ souls.
