Spring Tide

Rich Persoff

Walking early on the beach,
the ebb has washed away
yesterday´s footprints, bird tracks,

Sand castles, cans, bottles, hot dog buns,
abandoned towels, a lost shoe,
bits of sea wrack, condoms, crab shells,

Leaving an Eden of free unmarked openness
where occasional gulls scrabble,
pursued by great and terrifying waves.
