Zipper

Marylou Mansfield

Solid static grey of sky
Meets motionless same of sea;
Delicate edging delineates the two.
Eyes struggle to distinguish.
As finely sewn zipper in a silk gown,
Horizon is enclosed.

Power of heavens
Tugs on fastener.
Colors seep through seam.
Blues and greens trickle.
Slowly, they bristle to appear,
Revealing restless secrets.

Evening sky and sea marked clearly.
Daytime colors dim to shadows.
Brilliant magenta, orange, pink
Trumpet over bay.
Zipper pulled closed.
Night tucks away last of day’s celebration.
