Phobias
Is there anything that you are afraid of? Anything that you try to stay away from? Everyone has their own set of fears. Sometimes there is a reason for those fears, sometimes not.
Acarophobia and Other Phobias  In this article, I’m going to tell you about some of the unusual phobias that begin with the letter “A”, and suggest a writing exercise for each one. Have fun with them! Agyrophobia and Other Fears  A phobia is an irrational fear of a person, a place, an object, or an activity. Each person with a phobia has a distinct reason for the fear. Phobias are wonderful tools to be used by the writer; they add to the personality of a character and set him apart from the rest. Alliumphobia and Other Phobias  Pick one of the following phobias – alliumphobia, anthrophobia, illyngophobia, oneirophobia – and see if you can create a character with that specific fear.
Anablephobia and Other Fears  Phobias are a like a mine full of treasure for writers. These fears add both depth and uniqueness to our characters. Use the following phobias and come up with at least a story or story line for each one of them. Angrophobia and Apiphobia  Is it possible to make a person with angrophobia angry? Would someone with apiphobia own hives of bees? Would it add more to your story if you blessed (or cursed) one or more of your characters with these phobias?
Animal Phobias  I am surrounded by animals. They make my life so enjoyable that I cannot imagine living without them. There are people, though, who live their life as far away as they can from certain animals. For some reason, animal phobias tend to be more common in females than in males.
Asymmetriphobia and Pupaphobia  Would a person with asymmetriphobia be upset if he couldn’t find two matching socks to wear? What would cause a person with pupaphobia to have nightmares about puppets? Ballistophobia and Other Phobias  Phobias are constant, irrational fears that afflict some people. Their fears should be taken seriously. They should never be made fun of or belittled. But, as writers, we can bless (or curse) our characters with phobias and make the story so much more interesting.
Bogyphobia and Other Fears  For each of the following phobias, develop a story line and write a story. Or you may use the story line that I suggest, then write a story. The important thing is to have fun as you develop your writing skills.
Create Your Own Phobias: Tripoerdogaphobia  Every phobia has its starting point. I don’t believe that anyone is born with a phobia. There has to be something that happens to cause it to develop. I don’t exactly have what I would call a phobia, but I do have a fear. Is my fear unreasonable or without cause?
Cyssanophobia and Other Christmas Phobias  Do flashing lights cause your character to have a panic attack? Does she run the other direction when she sees a sprig of mistletoe? Does just the sight of a doll cause her to have nightmares? Dystychiphobia and Other Phobias  Never make fun of anyone with a phobia, but you can bless (or curse) your characters with any number of this fears. Pick one or more of the following phobias and create one or more characters afflicted with this fear or fears.
Entomophobia  I do not like bugs, but I am not phobic about them. At least I’m not now. Entomophobia,the fear of insects, or acarophobia, the fear of those little bugs that make you itch, can be used in your writing to give others chills. Farm Animal Phobias  All of the following phobias have to do with farm animals, or animals that people have as pets. Remember, each time a person with a phobia is confronted by what he or she fears, there are physical reactions. Fayophobia and Other Christmas Phobias  Does your character fear Christmas so much that he becomes a hermit at this time every year? Is your character that has a fear of elves being stalked by brownies, dwarves, and gnomes? Does the mere sight of Christmas presents send him into a panic attack? Halloween Related Phobias  Halloween immediately brings to mind candy and trick-or-treaters. One also thinks of bats and witches flying through the night sky, while owls are hooting from the trees. For many children, this is an enjoyable holiday. For those with certain phobias, it may be quite a frightening time. Ichthyophobia and Other Fears  Pick out one of the following phobias – ichthyophobia, myrmecophobia, or pediculophobia – and see if you can create a character that is afflicted with one or more of them. Irrational Fears  One of the ways to make your character more interesting is to give him or her an irrational fear, otherwise know as a phobia.
Medical Phobias  Medical phobias make up some of the most common fears, even in those you think wouldn't be afraid of anything. More Halloween Related Phobias  Phobias are everywhere. No matter what you fear, I'm sure there is a phobia that describes your fear perfectly. In this article are some phobias that I believe should be associated with Halloween. Nebulaphobia, the Fear of Fog  Have you ever been caught out in fog so thick you could not see your hand in front of your face? Or maybe you were driving and the fog was so thick you could barely see where you were going. There are some people who would be terrified by either situation. Nephophobia and Other Phobias  In no way should anyone who has a phobia be made fun of or belittled, but writers can use phobias to deepen their characters, to make them seem more real, and to add secondary plots to the story. What caused your character to develop this phobia? Is he trying to overcome it? Omphalophobia and Other Phobias  There are those who are phobic about different parts of the human body. In this article, we will see how phobias like this can be used to enhance your fiction story and make the life of your character afflicted with one or more of them really interesting, difficult, and humorous. Pediophobia, the Fear of Dolls  Pediophobia is the fear of dolls. The type of dolls that people with this phobia fear can vary greatly. Some have a fear of only antique dolls, old collectible dolls, or dolls with glass eyes. Some have a fear of Kewpie dolls. A lot seem to fear clown dolls. Phalangophobia and Other Phobias  A phobia is an irrational fear. You should never make fun of a person afflicted with a phobia, but you could use phobias to create an unforgettable character, one whose fear puts him or her in amusing situations.

Rare Phobias  The following phobias are rare, but they would add complication to the life of one or more of your characters. Strange Phobias  Unless you are afflicted with one of the following phobias, you will probably find them kind of humorous. It is hard for me to believe that some people really have fears about things that are so much a part of our everyday life. They do make characters interesting, though. Triskadekaphobia and Other Phobias  A phobia is defined as a persistent, irrational fear of a specific object, activity, or situation that leads to a compelling desire to avoid it. In this phobia article, numbers are the focus. Unusual Phobias  Some phobias are easier to deal with than others. Arachibutyrophobia, for example, would be an easy one for just about anybody to deal with. Others, like Geliophobia would be a bit more difficult. Weather Phobias  Lately, the news has been filled with accounts of capricious acts of weather. Powerful weather phenomena are fascinating to watch, yet terrifying. The fierceness of tornadoes and hurricanes leave one speechless and amazed. Weird Phobias  There are so many phobias. Each and every one of them is fascinating. I think there is a phobia for just about everything in existence. A lot of phobias are considered common, others are considered to be weird or strange. In this article, I talk about some of the ones considered weird. Zemmiphobia - Fear of the Great Mole Rat  Zemmiphobia is fear of the great mole rat. The very first thing I thought of when I found this phobia was the scene from The Princess Bride where Wesley and Buttercup battle rodents of unusual size in the Fire Swamp.
