There are German actors, movies, directors and artists that many people in North America are familiar with, yet the fact that they are from Germany is less well known.
Movies About or Filmed In Germany  These movies are filmed in Germany or are about German subjects. Some are about World War 2, but there are many other movies on the German topic as well! Ali - Fear Eats the Soul  Ali - Fear Eats the Soul is a somber German tale by Rainer Werner Fassbinder of racism in Munich of the 1970s. Cabaret - Pre War Berlin  Cabaret was filmed in the early 70s with Liza Minelli, Michael York and Joel Gray. It tells of life in pre-WW2 Germany, as the Nazis began to take power. Das Boot - Jürgen Prochnow  Das Boot is a classic submarine movie of WW2 starring Jürgen Prochnow. Its title in English is simply The Boat. Fatih Akin  Fatih Akin is doing his part to restore the name of German cinema. His latest film "The Edge of Heaven" premiered at Cannes and won the price for best screenplay last week. Metropolis - Fritz Lang  Metropolis was directed by Fritz Lang and, as a black and white silent film from 1927, had HUGE impacts on filmmakers for decades to come. The tale was of a large city with two classes. Name of the Rose  Starring Sean Connery and Matthew Broderick, this tale of medieval monks and a series of murders is one that can be watched over and over again. Run Lola Run - Lola Rennt  Run Lola Run is a 1998 movie by German director Tom Tykwer. Now on DVD with English subtitles, the movie is a run romp through 20 minutes of frantic story. The Adventures of Baron Munchausen  Directed by Terry Gilliam, this Pythonesque classic stars Uma Thurman, Oliver Reed, Robin Williams, Eric Idle and even Sting makes an appearance! The Berlinale  This week the new German Vanity Fair hit the shelves. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have reportedly bought an apartment in Berlin. International film stars like Clint Eastwood, Cate Blanchett, and Gael García Bernal have descended upon the capital this week as part of the 57th annual Berlin Interna The Devil's Brigade  Starring William Holden and featuring many other well known actors, The Devil´s Brigade is a world war 2 tale based on a true story of a group of heroes. The Dirty Dozen - WW2 Movie  The Dirty Dozen is one of the classic movies about World War 2 with an all star cast. A mangy group of men bands together to pull off an amazing WW2 escapade. The Great Escape - A True Story  Starring James Coburn, Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson and other greats, the Great Escape tells the true story of a massive prison break during World War II. The Harmonists - German Singing Group  The Harmonists is a movie about the real life singing group which rose to fame during World War II. The group was torn apart by the Nazis and ended their brilliant career abruptly. The Live of Others - Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film  What wasn’t quite possible during the World Cup finally came true last night at the Oscars. While soccer fans and film fans might not be the same audience, it’s no question that the cast and creators of The Lives of Others has made Germany proud. The Princess and the Warrior  German director Tom Tykwer brings back his star from Run Lola Run - Franka Potente - in this twisted tale of hopes and dreams. The Young Lions  Released in 1958, this black and white WW2 story traces 3 men - two American, one German - through the trials and tribulations of that war. Stars Marlon Brando and Dean Martin.
