First Ladies
Biographies and activities of Republican First Ladies.
Betty Ford – A Life of Energy and Courage Most people recognize the name Betty Ford because of the Betty Ford Center, whose mission is “To provide effective alcohol and other drug dependency treatment services, including programs of education and research to help women, men and families begin the process of recovery.” Laura Bush’s Positive Spin Michelle Obama is now all set to emulate the current First Lady’s ability to diffuse potential negative twitters of the press. What Mrs. Obama needs to understand is that Mrs. Bush’s ability to spin negatives into positives comes from a deep sense of compassion and contentment. Martha Jefferson - First Posthumous First Lady Mrs. Thomas Jefferson is the first posthumous First Lady, having died nineteen years before her husband was elected president. However, Jefferson never remarried, and the couple’s two daughters served in their mother’s place as First Lady. Mary Todd Lincoln Wife of the first Republican president, Abraham Lincoln, Mary Todd Lincoln was an active First Lady. She was also the first president’s wife to be designated “First Lady” by the press.
