Belfast Castle

Belfast Castle has a long and complicated history, from its early beginnings, Belfast castle has played a major role in the city and its development.

Situated on Cave Hill, Belfast Castle boasts a terrific view over the city, and is overlooked by "MacArt`s Fort", a rock where United Irishmen planned the rebellion of 1795. Climb the hill for a great view!

The castle and gardens were donated to the City of Belfast in 1934 by the Shaftesbury family and were used for many years from the end of the 2nd World War until the 1970's to host wedding receptions and dances.

On the castle grounds you will find some of the most beautiful gardens in all of Ireland, as well as a country park, restaurant and antique store.
The cellars of the castle have been transformed into the Victorian era, with gas lights, narrow streets, and shops.

On the second floor of the castle you will find the Cave Hill Heritage Center which shows visitors different aspects of the area, history, folklore, and wildlife to name just a few.

Don’t miss The Cave Hill Shop, the ‘Castle Tavern 'bar and the 'Castle Kitchen'-bistro Restaurant!
