A typical English Garden has old fashioned roses, full of fragrance and beauty tumbling over an arch or arbor.
They fill the garden with their perfume and colors.

If you are a gardener who likes everything to be just so, then these old fashioned rambling and climbing roses are not for you.
They enjoy being a bit wild and over abundant.
This is what I enjoy about these plants as they can cascade through trees, cover potting shed or any eyesore in the garden, are trained on trellises and clamber up a north walls.

If you are lucky enough to have an old tree in your garden try growing a rose up into its branches.

Here are five of my favourite ramblers - they are all summer flowering and all very fragrant, rather untidy and definitely big!

Roses for climbing into trees.

Bobbie James – he will grow into the tallest tree, easy to grow, not minding poorer soils and will reward you with cascade after cascade of white blossoms. 30x20foot.

Rambling Rector – this old and magnificent rose has small hips in the autumn and in summer is covered with masses of creamy white blossoms which last well. 20x15foot

Kiftsgate – if you want a rose that will grow 15 to 25 foot in a season this is the one for you!
Creamy white blooms with good autumn foliage and small red hips plus quite tolerant of poor soils.
30x20foot

Wedding Day – is another superb flowerer and is deliciously fragrant. It has white blossoms with large yellow stamens, very vigorous.
30x15foot

The Garland - not quite so rampant but again covered in wonderfully scented small creamy white blooms with a hint of pink. 15x10 foot

Traditional roses for trellis and arches.

Again go for the most perfumed you can find, these are all very scented.

Mme Alfred Carriere – famous for being in the Sissinghurst garden,it has a lovely scent with creamy pale pink blossoms and flowers almost continuously throughout the summer.
Will tolerate growing on a north wall. 15x10 foot

Constance Spry – this really a modern rose but it is in the old fashioned style.
It has a very lax habit so best trained over an arch where the lovely bright pink blooms will hang down.
Summer flowering. 18x10 foot

Feliticite et Perpetue is hardy, disease free and has small creamy white blooms touched with pink.
It has dark green foliage and is good on a trellis or wall. 15x10 foot.

Alberic Barbier – lovely creamy yellow flowers. The stems are easy to train, and it has lovely glossy leaves 15x10 foot

I include the next two because they are completely thornless.
So they are very good for growing in areas where there may be small children or by entrances such as porches and gates. Both have a lovely scent.

Kathleen Harrop - This rose flowers all summer with bright pink blooms.
10 x 7 foot

Zephirine Drouhin –Flowering continuously throughout the summer this rose has cerise pink blooms.
10x6 foot.
