What you wear to the golf course is almost as important as remembering to bring your golf clubs and getting there on time. Most people will agree that you want to wear comfortable clothing and shoes when you participate in any activity, and especially golf. Be careful though because your favorite jeans and comfy t-shirt may not be the best choice for the golf course.

The definition of proper golf attire is ultimately defined by each golf facility. Municipal courses are more casual, private clubs tend to be fairly traditional, and resort courses can go either way. A good rule of thumb, if in doubt, don’t wear it. You will be always be safe if you err on the side of conservative.

You’ll see a good representation of proper golf attire watching the pros on TV. Most men will be wearing long pants and a polo shirt. Women may select skirts of a certain length, crop pants or long pants, and collared shirt with or without sleeves, but no shorts or tank tops. College and high school golfers tend to be more casual with a modern look while still following established guidelines.

The one thing that is generally not allowed on most golf courses are jeans and cut-off short pants. They just plain are not allowed and you could be denied entry to the golf course if you show up wearing them. Really it’s not worth it.

Golf shoes may are also be restricted at many golf courses. Years ago the standard was metal spiked shoes, however, those spikes are unforgiving and can cause damage to the greens, so most recently the majority of courses now require shoes with rubber soles or soft spikes.

Hats, visors and other accessories are definitely encouraged, however, they should be somewhat conservative and in good taste. Bright and vivid colors are not necessarily considered offensive so definitely you can be creative in selecting something other than white.
