Planned Parenthood loses in Indiana

Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels, a Republican, signed the Planned Parenthood abortion funding bill. His signature makes Indiana the first state to do so. I for one, hope they realize, this is not to be a proud achievement.

It strips Planned Parenthood of all federal funding. Federal abortion funding was already banned, and in effect when, the new legislation for all funding including HIV/AIDS screening, pregnancy, cancer screenings, STD testing, and female and male health care, was taken from the 28 counties in Indiana that have a Planned Parenthood. Indiana has 92 counties. It was already difficult to obtain an abortion in the state, but now basic medical services are difficult to obtain as well.

Planned Parenthood of Indiana and the American Civil Liberties Union joined to fight the measure in court. They sought a restraining order to block the bill from taking effect. The Judge denied their request.

The percentage of abortions performed by Planned Parenthood as a whole is equal to 3%. The rest of their services received about 20% federal funding a year. Now that funding is gone. One sides view is now imposed on all people. The bill will not effect the rich or those fortunate enough to have affordable health insurance. This only hurts the poor or under insured. It targets a clinic that offers free health screenings of various types, low cost or free birth control, and/or pregnancy care for millions.

However, the bill does not stop the damage there. In Indiana, it also means abortions can only be performed to the 20th week, and that Dr.’s are required to tell women that abortions are linked to infertility. They do not tell you whose study, or where.

The fact is some studies have shown a link, and some have not. There is no conclusive link, and in fact, may be attributable to being pregnant in general and not be because of abortion. That is not what the bill requires that women hear.

Indiana faces a federal funding loss of roughly $4 million.

Why are people so quite? The supporters of this bill want to make it more difficult to obtain an abortion. Clearly, the legislation is designed to go around legalized abortion by making it difficult and yet it is happening in rampant numbers all around the country.

Planned Parenthood is losing all the funds because one side does not want any federal funds to go to any entity that provides abortion. Abortion funding was already banned. This is simply one side’s moral conscience being imposed on another, legally.

Moreover, it is happening. Indiana should be screaming with every state right behind it. Thousands will die from lack of care and none of it will have anything to do with abortion. Those lives don’t count.
