Restoration Tournament August 2011

A group of ambition men decided to take it upon themselves to start to clean up the rocks from Mill Creek, our once beautiful little creek on Mill Creek Golf Club. After the September flood of 2010 this little creek has been destroyed and covered with tons of rocks and sand. The once beautiful trees are now gone or left broken and dead. Weeds have sprung up to make for an unsightly mess that was asking for somebody to do something. These men headed by Joe Oliver, Danny McCort, Larry Nathanson and Bill Pinkston worked tirelessly to remove the rock below our unique one way bridge. This completed work has been an amazing improvement.

These men then decided that they needed the help of the Salado Community to continue from this area downstream to the next road way a good wide area of destruction. Their idea was to hold a golf tournament on Tuesday August 16 which normally the golf course is closed. This created a tremendous interest and people began donating support to sponsor a golf hole for $100.00 plus signing up to play in the tournament for $80.00 per person. They received 108 golfers who participated in this tournament that turned into a great success. I have been told they raised $17,000 which will help tremendously in finishing the cleanup of our little creek.

I did not participate in the tournament as many of my friends who play golf just cannot take the 100 degree heat we are having and the tournament was scheduled to start at 10:00 a.m. I did offer to sponsor five golf holes and work one of the hole-in-one contests they were offering. They received excellent offers for prizes on all our par three golf holes.

This new Club Car was a great incentive to make a great shot.

Tee off where you can see how the drought is drying out the course. The signs were made for all those who donated to sponsor a golf hole.

During my two hours here only two balls came close but rolled on by the flag.

Many volunteers offered to supply the breakfast and lunch. Our Ladies Group was asked to donate desserts and I offered to take that on since I have been into a cookie and cake baking mood and had a good supply in my freezer. They had a large tent erected near the club house set up with tables and chairs for their meals. Around the putting green they had an array of vehicles that help sponsor the hole-in-ones contests. It turned out to be a great day even in the 100 degree heat but when it goes for a good cause everybody is willing to do their part.
