Honeymooning on the Slopes

This time of year many honeymooners’ thoughts may drift away from beach destinations to fluffy snow covered northern slopes dotted by cozy, romantic inns. Such a honeymoon haven can be found in the heart of Idaho's Sun Valley, at the newly renovated Knob Hill Inn.

Situated in the heart of Sun Valley, the small hotel boasts 29 rooms and suites overlooking world-famous Bald Mountain and the majestic Sawtooth and Boulder Mountain ranges. The location promises privacy, yet it is walking distance to historic downtown Ketchum which offers easy access to outdoor recreation for which this iconic town is so noted.

After a brisk day of snowshoeing, skiing and ice skating, you can tuck yourselves into your beautifully appointed suite – most of them with fireplaces – or simply “hang out” in the lobby with its double-sided fireplace, as you sip a hot toddy and watch the world go by. Should you feel the need for more exercise, there’s a heated indoor and fully equipped gym.

For the super adventurous, the area offers heli-skiing with backcountry trips to the 7,000 to 10,000 foot range with a variety of terrain and runs to suit every level of skiing ability, including 33-degree pitches, 40-degree chutes and steady 2,000-vertical-foot descents.

The hotel’s Grill at Knob Hill, dishes up distinctive Northwest cuisine, with a nod to a variety of American and European classics in a casual atmosphere. A signature, complimentary Continental breakfast buffet is served daily in the Fireside room.

This winter, romantic packages which include champagne and handmade chocolates are currently being featured. Also included is one full day of guided backcountry skiing with a certified guide from Sun Valley Trekking, a deluxe picnic lunch for two, and transportation to and from the chosen ski area.

Sun Valley Trekking is one of the foremost wilderness hut-to-hut ski operations in North America. Six backcountry huts and yurts provide exceptional opportunities for hut-skiing, field-based avalanche education courses, mountain biking and summer trekking in the mountains of central Idaho. The company is a licensed outfitter and guide for skiing, cross-country touring, snowboarding, snowshoeing, mountain biking and trekking. If you prefer, they specialize in custom guided treks year round…with unique adventure opportunities.

Summer, of course offers a slate of outdoor options, ranging from hiking, fishing, biking, horseback riding and water sports. For golfers, there are three 18-hole courses.

Nearby Ketchum - named after David Ketchum a trapper and guide - has morphed from one of the richest mining districts in the Northwest in the 19th century, to a year-round resort. It’s the perfect honeymoon haven, whenever you decide to go.
