Today In …

1820 - The Cato Street Conspiracy was discovered. The conspiracy was a plot to assassinate members of the British cabinet.

1822 - The city of Boston was incorporated.

1836 - The Alamo (and its occupants) came under siege by Santa Anna’s forces today.

1904 - The U.S. paid $10 million for control of the Panama Canal.

1927 - Calvin Coolidge established the Federal Radio Commission, a precursor to the Federal Communication Commission, to regulate what was broadcast on the airwaves.

1945 - American forces raised the U.S. flag on top of Mount Suribachi during the Battle of Iwo Jima.

1954 - Jonas Salk’s polio vaccine was first distributed to children.

Howard Jones the singer behind the hit song “What is Love” was born in 1955.

Kelly MacDonald the actress who has appeared in the films “Trainspotting”, “Gosford Park” and “Nanny McPhee” was born in 1976.

Niecy Nash the actress best known as Office Raineesha Williams on the TV comedy “Reno 911!” was born in 1970.

Patricia Richardson the star of TV favorites “Home Improvement” and “Strong Medicine” was born in 1951.

Diane Varsi the actress who appeared in such films as “Peyton Place” was born in 1938.

Brad Whitford guitarist for the rock band Aerosmith was born in 1952.

We Said Goodbye To…

John Quincy Adams the sixth President of the United States passed away in 1848 at the age of 80.

Carl Anderson the actor who appeared in “Jesus Christ Superstar”, “The Color Purple” and a variety of TV shows passed away in 2004 at the age of 58.

Melvin Franklin who sang bass for the Temptations passed away in 1995 at the age of 52.

John Keats the infamous poet passed away in 1821 at the age of 25.

Stan Laurel one half the comedy duo Laurel & Hardy (with Oliver Hardy) passed away in 1965 at the age of 74.
