NAACP Image Awards Recap

The winners of the “43RD NAACP Image Awards” were announced recently from Los Angeles’ historic Shrine Auditorium. Sanaa Latham, screen star from the movie Contagion and Anthony Macki, from “Hurt Locker,” and “Adjustment Bureau” hosted the two hour event.

Some of the biggest names in film, television and music appeared including LL Cool J, Paula Patton, Cuba Gooding Jr., Vanessa Williams, Jordin Sparks, Russell Hornsby, Keke Palmer, Corey Reynolds, Judge Greg Mathis, Harry Belafonte, Sidney Poitier, Holly Robinson Peete, Regina King, Taraji P. Henson, Terrence Howard, Samuel L. Jackson, Cicely Tyson, Diahann Carroll, Archie Panjabi and Hill Harper with performances by Jennifer Hudson, Lenny Kravitz, Jill Scott, Kirk Franklin and Ne-Yo.

Kirk Franklin was the big winner for the night for Gospel taking home the Outstanding Gospel Album award.

George Lucas received the NAACP Vanguard Award, Radio One/TV One Founder Cathy Hughes received the NAACP Chairman’s Award and The Founding Members of the Black Stuntmen’s Association received the NAACP President’s Award.

The highlight of the event was a moving tribute for Whitney Houston as well as all the other stars that have passed away since the last awards ceremony. Yolanda Adams performed the powerful hymn “I Love the Lord”, originally penned by Isaac Watts but made famous by Houston. Adams did a wonderful job on the song and moved the entire audience to a standing ovation.
