Classic Film Books for Summer

Got a long plane ride this summer? Or maybe you like lounging by the pool or beach with a good book? Whatever the case may be, if you're a classic film fan, chances are you don't just watch classic movies, but you love reading about the movie stars and film history. Here are a few books to check out this summer that inspired some classic movies, classic stars and books about Hollywood.

"Jaws: A Novel" by Peter Benchley. First published in 1974 with Spielberg's classic released a year later, this summer blockbuster book and film will have you afraid of going in the water. You will be surprised at the differences between the book and film. Caution: Do not read this near the water.

"Judy Garland: A Portrait in Art & Anecdote" by John Fricke and Lorna Luft. A splendid archival book filled with high-quality photographs of Miss Show Business, a timeline of her life and career, and also includes quotes by herself, family, friends, and industry colleagues. For curious Classic Hollywood fans, and long time admirers of Judy Garland, John Fricke's books are ones not to be missed. Historian John Fricke has made a respectable career out of dispelling rumors of Judy's tumultuous life, highlighting the best of her talents, and introducing Judy Garland to new audiences through books and television.

"Jack and the Jungle Lion" by Stephen Jared. This entertaining, fast-paced novel is perfect for the beach or the pool. Topping at a mere 115 pages, you will be immersed in the life of Jack Hunt, 1930s action hero and his real-life adventure in the Amazon.

"Fragments: Poems, Intimate Notes & Letters" by Marilyn Monroe, edited by Bernard Comment and narrated by Stanley Buchthal. This is a fascinating look into the personal writings of one of the world's most beautiful yet disturbed icons.

"Hollywood Stories" by Stephen Schochet. This is a great book if you just want some quick anecdotes and facts about Hollywood. If you're taking a trip to California, be sure to take this along and impress your friends and family with your knowledge of Hollywood.
