Review of James Island County Park

The next time you visit Charleston, South Carolina, you’re going to want to stay at the RV park at James Island County Park. Not only are there great amenities found within the park, it’s also centrally located to just about any attraction you want to visit. Once you get in the park you’ll feel like you’re miles away from it all, but it’s just a short drive to Folly Beach, many of the plantations, and historic downtown Charleston.

Park Amenities
The 643-acre park features miles of paved biking trails, the Splash Zone--a happening water park that even has a lazy river, a spray fountain for the little kiddies, a state-of-the-art shaded playground, covered picnic shelters, and a lake for those who enjoy fishing or fiddling around with remote controlled sailboats. It even has a 50-foot climbing wall for those seeking a more challenging adventure. During the summer, the park hosts a reggae concert series. And, of course, the park has the campground.

However, beyond all of the stuff you can read about in the brochures, the park just has a pleasant vibe to it. It’s relaxed and a very family-friendly place. It also has great insect noises—there’s nothing quite like hearing a choir of cicadas in your campsite. And the scenery is spectacular; there are not too many sights prettier than a huge oak tree with Spanish moss hanging from it.

The Campground
Your first impression of the campground is going to start in the well-stocked gift shop that features a variety of things to make your stay more comfortable. They’ve got water toys, sunscreen, bug spray, toiletries, snacks and refrigerated food items. Once you’ve checked in, you’ll mosey through one of the coziest campgrounds in the area. The campground features 124 spacious, mostly full hook-up sites and has a good mix of back-in and pull-thru gravel sites to choose from. And no RVer needs to be left out of visiting this campground as the sites can accommodate even the biggest of rigs. Although I personally think some sites are better than others based on my preference for being in the sun (sites 114, 122, 42 and 43 were some of my favorites), the volunteer camp host I spoke to from Florida disagreed. He said there was no such thing as a bad site at the park, although Loop 2 was his favorite.

The campground also has an ice machine, propane, firewood, a laundry center and offers free WiFi. It’s an ideal park for biking so don’t forget to bring your bikes along. Also, since the campground is located directly across from the water park, don’t forget your swimsuits either!

Where to Eat
Once you’ve had your fill of soy hot dogs and veggie burgers on the grill, head out to Folly Road and check out some of the local restaurants. Jasmine Thai is a darling little Thai food restaurant located nearby. Their Massaman Curry with tofu is pretty tasty. Black Bean Co., also located on Folly Road, serves healthy dishes including many vegan options. Both restaurants are just a short drive from the park.

What to do Nearby
The campground is so centrally located to everything, it’s a great basecamp for exploring the area. Whether you’re learning to surf at Folly Beach, taking a sunset cruise of the Charleston harbor, or visiting one of the many popular restaurants in downtown Charleston, you’re sure to find plenty to do. If you didn’t bring your Toad with you, no fear. The RV park also offers roundtrip shuttle service to and from downtown and Folly Beach for a small fee.
