Sonic Riders Zero Gravity Wii

Sonic Riders Zero Gravity for the Wii is a skateboard racing game in a futuristic world with Sonic. It's similar to Mario Kart in the way you gather power-ups, and you're of course chasing rings as well.

The controls can be incredibly frustrating to master - give yourself time to stick with it and have to try and try again. You're holding your Wiimote sideways and using it to turn and twist your way through the tracks. In many cases you just can't do the track cleanly without special power-ups. So again this can lead to a lot of frustration as you're getting started in the game.

The game pushes its "frenzy" feeling fairly hard. The music is fast and furious, the screens are blinking with all manners of lights, objects, obstacles, and more. This will end up being a preference issue for gamers. Some gamers adore this chaos-everywhere feeling to a game. I would personally rather have a racing game where it's about my skill on the track, not whether I can make out where the proper path is supposed to go amongst all the flashing and blinking and spinning lights.

I've played most of the other Sonic games that have come out, and for whatever reason I prefer the side-scrolling looping ones the most. I do enjoy racing games, but this one, to me, tries to combine too many different elements into one space.

Certainly an interesting game, and I know there are some who adore what it has to offer. They love the blinking madness, the frenetic pace and the blaring music. I think it's fair enough to say that I'm just not keen on those styles of games, and that therefore Sonic Riders Zero Gravity wasn't a hit in this household. I have plenty of other racing games to play when I want my racing fix.

I purchased this game with my own funds in order to do this review.
