I appreciate a good, and affordable, book on blogging. However, not all blogging books on the market are necessarily going to inform the uninformed. The WordPress Power Guide – Using WordPress to Blog Your Way to Success is comprehensive enough at approximately 100 pages, but is lacking in organization, substance in some areas and quite possibly blogging ethics.
The beginning of the book is very disjointed and hard to read. It is easy to overlook grammatical and spelling errors in the translation of content to an electronic format but that does not appear to be the case here. Add to that the awkward use of illustrations throughout and you find it even less palatable. The author does allow readers to pick up a pdf copy to fix the image problem.
Lambert Klein has written a number of technical books related to internet marketing on the topics of blogging and search engine optimization (SEO). If the experience he shares and methods he claims that work well for him are truly successful, I believe examples of those successes could be shared as well. I saw no screenshots of analytics present in this WordPress Power Guide.
After struggling through the beginning of the book and the disorganized structure of most of the content, readers do find a point where they feel like they are getting some information. Klein seems well-versed in SEO and some key WordPress plug-ins, but he shares his favorite for any given task and does not offer options or make comparisons. A few plug-ins were new and impressive to me and I am eager to test them out.
It wasn’t long after however that I felt some of the tactics shared were a method of marketing in the blogger world known as “black hat.” I would be concerned if a new blogger read this guide and proceeded to practice some of these methods, such as using software programs to create comment spam on blogs.
While I did learn about a few new plug-ins and programs available to bloggers, I recommend that anyone that does read the WordPress Power Guide - Using WordPress to Blog Your Way to Success - Blogging Guide by Lambert Klein research some of his blog marketing methods further. For new bloggers, there is more information about general set up and content then is shared in this book as well.
