Case Closed Double Feature

The Case Closed Double Feature DVD box set includes the first two movies, The Time Bombed Skyscraper and The Fourteenth Target. From what I can tell, it appears that all FUNimation did was to take the discs from when the films were released separately and put them together into one package. However, I was a little disappointed that instead of having one disc on each side of the DVD case, the two discs were packaged one side (with one disc overlapping the other).

In The Time Bombed Skyscraper, Conan, Rachel, and Richard go to a party being hosted by a famous architect named Leo Joel, and they meet the architect in person. Conan and Rachel see a gallery of pictures of the buildings that Joel has designed. After the party, a rash of arsons is targeting mansions, which include buildings that Joel had designed. The news also reports that a cache of explosive material has been stolen.

Conan is sent on a wild goose chase by a mysterious man to look for bombs before they go off. After Conan gets the police involved, Conan realizes there's a connection between the arsons, bombs, and the architect's work. The film reaches its climax when Rachel is in the same location as the last bomb.

When it came to The Time Bombed Skyscraper, I thought the story wasn't quite strong enough to be a 90-minute feature film. Personally, I think it would have worked better as a two-part episode for the television anime series.

The DVD for The Time Bombed Skyscraper has two extras: "Character Profiles" and "Trailers." The character profiles are one-page writeups with a picture for each character that's included. There are FUNimation-related trailers included in the "Trailers" portion.

In The Fourteenth Target, people who are close to Richard are being targeted by an unknown assailant. The early targets in the film include Inspector Meguire, Eva, and Dr. Agasa; with all three of these attacks, a paper mache object is left behind at the scene.

Conan deduces that the paper mache objects correspond to the items being held by the King, Queen, and Jack in a deck of cards. He also figures out that each victim has the playing card's number as part of their name. Together, Richard and Conan must figure out who the remaining victims are and solve the crime.

When compared to The Time Bombed Skyscraper, I thought that The Fourteenth Target was a better story for a feature film. In some respects, I thought the story could have been expanded a little longer to make it a little stronger. However, with a story that features such a large number of targets, it was probably easier to rush some parts of the plot in order to fit into a 90-minute runtime. This particular film also has some good backstory for Richard, and helps the audience better understand his character.

The only extras on the disc for The Fourteenth Target are trailers. There are a total of eight trailers that are included.

The Case Closed Double Feature DVD box set is worth the investment if you want to own the Case Closed films in your home video library and you don't already own these films from when they were released separately.

I wrote this review after watching a copy of this DVD release that my husband and I purchased.
