Aurora can't remember anything before the day she showed up on her foster mother's front step. She's always felt different from other people, like something was missing, something hidden in her unknown past. Now at the cusp of adulthood Aurora decides to find out why she has no memories and hopefully to uncover where she comes from.

With her best friend (and fellow orphan) Fenn, Aurora follows what few clues she has about her origins, but a strange sense has awakened in her her. Something powerful and inexplicable. And then there's "Mr. Creepy" and weird stranger who claims Aurora is part of a prophecy to save a dying race she's never even heard of.

Born in Flames by Candace Knoebel draws on many well used tropes in fantasy literature-- a prophecy, an unknowing savior to name two. While this isn't necessarily bad, there needs to be something to set it aside from what has already been done. Born in Flames has potential, but I think it falls short. The small amount that shows the world Aurora comes from is much more exciting than the one in the story. Her transformation is an interesting idea and I wish it had been more prominent.

My Recommendation
While well written, Born in Flames by Candace Knoebel didn't live up to my expectations. I'm curious to see if the subsequent titles in the series create a fuller world and explore Aurora's transformation in more depth. Unfortunately, I'd have to call this one mediocre.
