Living In Gratitude

It is easy to forget that life is actually miraculous. The fact that we are here having this experience is mind blowing, and it is all happening on a planet spinning around in space. Sometimes we need a little perspective and distance from our situation to fully appreciate just how amazing it is.

Carrying limiting beliefs and sadness can be exhausting, and keeps the mind focused on negatives. We are more likely to notice all the things we haven’t got as opposed to the things we have. Especially if we have been trying to manifest something that we have felt was missing.

When we declare that we are the abundance, the infinite and the amazingness of the universe, we end up carrying that as our belief. We don’t have to think it all the time once it is in our subconscious, because it will run and affect everything just the same as when our belief was negative.

Starting a gratitude practice is perfect for seeing the good in life, and skimming over the negatives. By doing this we become more aware of the positives that are in our life, and start celebrating them every day.

A Gratitude Practice

A gratitude practice is when you write down every day at least 5 things you are grateful for. It doesn’t take long for this to become natural. The more you practice the more you become grateful for everything that happens to you – even the challenging things become gifts to be grateful for.

Some people like to write down five things they are grateful for on waking, while others prefer to do this at night before going to bed. I suggest doing both at first until it becomes natural to feel grateful for everything in your life.

Throughout the day I am continually saying thank you. Thank you for my parking space, thank you that I am always provided for, for example; thank you for my friends and all the love I experience. It is easy to find something to be grateful for no matter our situation. I remember the story of Viktor Frankl, a holocaust survivor who said that he survived by seeing the good in everything – even the food he was served that consisted of dirty water with fish heads floating in it! If you put your mind to it, you can find things to be grateful for.

This practice keeps your attention on the positives and away from the negatives, so that if anything comes along to through you off you are more able to see it as a good thing because it brought you a new opportunity for growth, rather than it being the ‘last straw’.

Alternatively when we focus our mind towards the negative all the time, we find more things to be negative about. It is amazing how a simple mind shift can make all the difference to our life, and experiences. You are effectively creating your reality more in alignment with what you want when you practice gratitude, rather than attracting more of what it is you do not want.

Ralph Waldo Emerson had this to say on the matter of gratitude;

“Cultivate the habit of being grateful for every good thing that comes to you, and to give thanks continuously. And because all things have contributed to your advancement, you should include all things in your gratitude.”

Every experience we have shapes our future, and the person we are. Everything seems to have a reason and purpose, and mostly our greatest challenges bring us our greatest lessons.
