As a summer tatting project tatters in the Online Tatting Class have been rewriting and modernizing the patterns in this vintage tatting book. Diagrams and new models have been prepared to help the tatter follow the patterns more easily. Both the original public domain booklet and the new version are being posted online to share with all tatters everywhere.

"Forty Original Designs in Tatting By Nellie Hall Youngburg, Novel and Unique Designs with Complete Instructions for Every Pattern Designed and Executed by Nellie Hall Youngburg Brookings, SD © 1921" appears to have been published privately originally. It was reprinted as "Tatting #6" in 1982 by the House of White Birches. The original is a public domain booklet.

The name of the tatter who helped prepare each pattern is listed on each page. Unless otherwise noted, the diagrams are by Jane Eborall. The designs are diverse. They include edgings and insertions, small motifs suitable as accents or if tatted in multiples perfect items to create tablecloths and bedspreads. The collars, yokes and baby bonnet contain elements not often seen. And the cover piece, when tatted in color, is striking.
