Middle school homeschoolers are often overwhelmed with core curriculum, and taking an elective co-op class is a great way for them to socialize and learn at the same time. While I am a definite proponent of teaching core classes in a co-op environment with the proper teaching tools, this article will focus on elective class ideas. Here is a list of class ideas for you middle school homeschool crew:

1. "Career Options"- Explore the realm of career options with your class. Feature one or several careers to explore each week, and invite community members to come in and present about a typical day in the life with their career.

2. "Drama & Acting Technique"- There is likely a homeschooling mom or dad who starred in school plays or was a real drama queen! Basic technique can be shared with the students, and they can practice skits and group performances. Look for a book or information to fit the needs of your students, albeit a Christian skits book or a basic how to act guide.

3. "Knit and Sew"- It is hard to find a mom who is skilled at knitting or sewing. If you have one in your homeschool support group consider yourself lucky! Hopefully there will be interested middle school students who wish to learn how to sew and knit for themselves.

4. "Book Club"- Have a weekly book club, either focusing on a single book or a series. You can find some super ideas for book club choices for the middle school crowd below:


5. "Strategy Game Club"- Teamwork, fun and exploration of strategic methods are all wonderful for the middle school aged kids. Set up your class so everyone gets an opportunity to try each game throughout the course, as well as play against everyone at least once. Games like Chess, Stratego, Risk, Backgammon and Forbidden Island are fantastic for both boys and girls alike.
