Sports.

I always turn to the sports section first. The sports page records people's accomplishments; the front page has nothing but man's failures.
Earl Warren

In the recent site searches for quotations, someone searched 'sport'. I found it quite interesting that someone would look for quotations about sport, perhaps trying to find inspiration like many of us do when we are looking for quotations about life. If you think of sports quotations, or type it into google, you are likely to come up with quotations from sportsmans or coaches about their team or how well they have done. I decided to look for quotes which are more general in sport, about the game itself and not individual players.

The first quote I came across was the one above in bold, which I found quite humorous and thought I would include it in this article. It is very true that stories that make the front page in the news are usually stories that shock people, and this shock is usually escalated from negative happenings or events. The news in the sports however, although will evidently record some of the negative aspects of the sports news that week, is more importantly there to highlight accomplishments. Shouldn't we highlight accomplishments in everyday life and not just sport? Why is it that sport is something we can show that we are proud of however other accomplishments are not so widely spread.

When looking through the general sports quotes that I found, I realized that the majority of them can easily be related to our everyday lives. Although the basis of them might be about sport and winning and losing and competition, isn't this something that we experience in our lives anyway?

"Where you start is not as important as where you finish."

"Whenever you get knocked down in the game of life, immediately get up, get better and get going again."

"The more you sweat in practice, the less you bleed in battle."

"Why did I want to win? because I didn't want to lose!"

"Sports serve society by providing vivid examples of excellence." (George.F.Will)

The importance of 'finishing' as mentioned in the first quote, I think, is talking about the destination, if we have something that we want to achieve then no matter how far away we are from this dream when we begin, it doesn't matter as long as we achieve it in the end. The more work we put into achieving this, the better our accomplishment will be. The more fight and drive we have in this, the more likely we will achieve it. It is easy to see how all these quotes about SPORT can relate to us in every day lives.

Inspirational? I think so.
