The USDA revises their recommended food pyramid every few years. The next version of the food pyramid will recommend avoiding refined carbs and white bread.
It is amazing that only a few years ago, low carb diets were discounted as complete nonsense. Now, with numerous studies and long term weight loss showing the success of this system, doctors have realized just how bad refined grains and white bread are for you.
In addition, the USDA is following the low carb path with its recommendation of salmon eating. The pyramid now instructs users to eat at least two portions of salmon each week for its omega-oil benefits.
The pyramid now goes beyond just food. In an important step, it also indicates that exercise is critical to maintaining a healthy weight - something that low carb has always emphasized. This involves at least 20 minutes of activity on most days.
The new food pyramid is not yet set in stone - final discussions and approval must be given. But for millions of obese people everywhere, this is finally a pyramid that can guide them towards attaining and maintaining a healthy weight!
