In a study done in Mexico, women who ate high carb diets were over twice as likely to come down with breast cancer. This reinforces the results of previous studies.
The Mexico study results were published in the Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention journal. The researchers worked with over 1,500 women to determine their results.
Rates for breast cancer are higher in the US than just about anywhere else in the world, at 132 cases per 100,000 women. Many blame this high rate on the high-sugar diet prevalent in the US. There is a very strong link between obesity and breast cancer risk.
The scientists knew about the obesity link before beginning this study and were sure to take that into account. Even when you factored out the obesity element, the women who ate more sugar were still more likely to get breast cancer. The scientists feel that the sugar intake causes a blood sugar spike / insulin reaction, and that this is what helps to fuel the cancer cells.
The American Cancer Society recommends a diet rich in vegetables and fiber, and maintaining a healthy weight as ways to minimize your risk for breast cancer.
