College Majors

As a college student in the United States, you will be required to declare at least one course of study (referred to as a major). This declaration may be made prior to matriculation or during your enrollment.

Choosing a major is a very important decision. Academically, you will want to select a major that will interest you because you will be spending a great deal of time studying the chosen subject. Your major should also correlate to your future academic aspirations.

Some careers, such as social work or nursing, require students to have graduated with a degree in a specific major. Other careers may not require a specific major, but employers may prefer employees with related academic backgrounds. Many employers also prefer students who have done well academically. Students tend to earn higher grades in majors they enjoy. Therefore, it is important to choose your major wisely.

One way to narrow down your choice of major is to research possible majors and eliminate ones that do not seem to be a good fit or that you are ineligible for (some majors have restrictions, such as audition or GPA requirements). To do this, start with a list of majors, and then research interesting majors and majors you know little about. As you eliminate majors, crossed them off of your list.

Because there are many colleges, each offering their own majors, it is impossible to provide a list of every major offered. Many colleges give their own title to their majors. For example, what may be called criminal justice at one college may be called administration of justice at another.

However, the following is a broad list of majors offered by various colleges throughout the United States. You can use this list to to help you research possible colleges majors. In addition, you can search for more majors by researching college Web sites and college course catalogs.
