Replacement Closet Doors

Many people have closet door issues. Often, sliding closet doors will break or come off the track. Wooden doors in older houses sometimes swell up during moist weather and can get stuck. Some parents, fearing that their child's fingers will get pinched playing in the closet doors will actually remove them, to protect their munchkins.

None of these things would be problems if the insides of our closets looked like those closet organizer commercials, but they often don't. More than just a place to store clothing and shoes, closets end up storing other things, too. Modern houses tend to have very large closets, and can be used to store unused furniture, small appliances, sporting goods, and more.

Aside from spending a fortune on new replacement closet doors, what's a family to do?

Window Blinds are a great way to cover a missing closet door. Having window blinds where the closet should be gives a visitor the impression that there's a sliding glass door there.

Curtains are a popular way to deal with missing closet doors. Instead of something boring, though, try something dramatic. Hang the rod outside of the door frame, just like you would with a window. Use a liner and tie-backs to add to the illusion that there's a real window there. Many people will use an expandable shower curtain rod and hang a sheet or something over it, but that looks cheesy and for a few dollars more you can end up with a really neat look. Curtains that you're using inside like this don't need to be as sturdy and thick as window curtains because the sun won't be beating on them. In fact, you'll likely want to make sure they're machine washable and machine dryable, too.

If your sliding closet doors are damaged, you can repair them with drywall putty just like you'd repair a hole in the wall. Sand them smooth and paint them to match the walls or the rest of the closet doors. You can also use wallpaper to cover the panels in your sliding closet doors.

Be creative when dealing with missing and broken closet doors. Makeshift closet doors can have a unique style of their own, without breaking the budget or earning you a guest appearance on redneck wedding.
